Depth Symbols

I recently viewed a Facebook reel that sadly recorded the Funeral Mass of a 10 year old boy. His death came about after a long battle with cancer. I was shock to see that most of the people attending were dressed extremely casually……many wearing shorts, sports’ jerseys and sneakers. Particularly disturbing was the use of what looked like a bed quilt as the funeral pall. Pastors in attempts to make liturgies more “relevant” end up throwing out the baby with the bath water. Depth symbols like incense smoke, holy water, a paschal candle and a white pall can be understood even by the youngest Catholics. There is no need to change things to make them more “relevant.” Saint Daniel the Stylite, Ora Pro Nobis!
